Meditation Om & Aloha

BY les | Mon 11 Jul, 2016

I hope you are enjoying the great weather and find this months blog good for your heart and soul. Remember sunshine is one of the best sources of Vitamin D, in the UK our skin isn’t able to make vitamin D from October to March, as the sunlight hasn’t got enough UVB radiation so why not come and do yoga with me this October at my  Spanish Yoga Retreat? Dates for February next year will be released soon.

Meditation

I have been doing the same yoga postures for over 17 years now and somebody asked me the other day “don’t you get bored with it” my answer was I don’t think you can get bored with meditation. I then thought further about the question as realised that they were only observing the practice as a physical thing and I appreciate that when you first start the Ashtanga practice is a very physical thing but that is not what we are aiming for. We want to ascend this by using the breath and smile to achieve a state of nothingness because nothingness is bliss. Five simple rules to be happy

Free your heart from hatred - Forgive.

Free your mind from worries - Most never happens.

Live simply and appreciate what you have.

Give more.

Expect less from people but more from yourself

Chanting Om

The ears create sound from vibration but even without the ability to hear there is still vibration.  Every moment of every day wherever we are the energy vibrations that create sound are vibrating every cell in our body.  In the body vibratory waves have most effect on our two systems:  Neurological (brain) and Endocrine (glands).  Our own vocal sounds strongly vibrate the brain, pituitary and hypothalamus.

Research has shown that the vibratory effects of chanting and singing can:

lower heart rate
lower blood pressure
reduced stress hormones
improve output of melatonin (helps us sleep)
increase lymphatic circulation
enhance release of endorphins (pain and mood moderators)
increase immune system function

In yoga philosophy the mantra ‘Om’ is considered the most basic sound of the universe.  Composed of ‘ah’, ‘oh’, ‘mm’ and silence, it refers to the trinity of creation, preservation and destruction.  The passive (silent) element is the culmination of the first three.

Finally

An old Cherokee told his grandson “My Son, there is a battle by two wolves inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies & ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness empathy & truth”.

The boy thought about it, and asked “Grandfather which wolf wins?”

The old man quietly replied, “The one you feed”
